How to become a software developer

Degrees, skills, projects and job search – a practical roadmap to becoming a software developer in India, with or without a CS degree.

Software development is one of the few careers where skills and projects can matter as much as your degree.

Education options

  • B.Tech/B.E. in CSE, IT, AI/DS – the most common route; best campus placements.
  • BCA → MCA – a strong, affordable path.
  • B.Sc Computer Science – good fundamentals; add projects.
  • Any degree + self-learning – possible, but you'll need a strong portfolio.

A learning roadmap

  1. One programming language well – Python, Java, JavaScript or C++.
  2. Data structures and algorithms – needed for most interviews.
  3. Pick a track: web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, a framework, a backend, databases), mobile apps, data science/AI, or cloud and DevOps.
  4. Git and GitHub – put all your work online.
  5. Build 3–5 real projects that solve actual problems.
  6. Internships – even small ones count.

Getting a job

  • Campus placements, off-campus drives, job portals and LinkedIn.
  • Practise coding problems and mock interviews.
  • Freelance projects can build experience early.

Government IT jobs

NIC scientists, bank IT officers (IBPS SO), ISRO/DRDO, and CDAC also hire computer science graduates.
