How to become an engineer: from JEE to your first job

Choosing a branch and college, entrance exams (JEE, state CETs), the diploma route, and careers after B.Tech – GATE, PSUs, private jobs and higher studies.

Routes into engineering

  1. 12th with PCM → B.Tech/B.E. (4 years). Admission through JEE Main (NITs, IIITs and many state colleges), JEE Advanced (IITs), state CETs (e.g. MHT CET, KCET, WBJEE, AP/TS EAPCET), and private university tests (BITSAT, VITEEE and others).
  2. 10th → Polytechnic diploma (3 years) → lateral entry into 2nd year of B.Tech. A practical route that also qualifies you for JE jobs right after the diploma.

Choosing a branch

  • Computer Science / IT / AI & Data Science – highest demand in software; very competitive.
  • Electronics / Electrical – semiconductors, power, telecom, PSUs.
  • Mechanical / Civil – manufacturing, construction, infrastructure; strong for government jobs (PWD, railways, PSUs).
  • Chemical, aerospace, biotech and others – specialised industries and research.

A good college with a branch you like is usually better than a poor college with a "popular" branch.
