How to become a doctor in India (MBBS route)

From 12th PCB to MBBS, internship, PG specialisation and government jobs – the full path to becoming a doctor in India.

Becoming a doctor is a long but deeply rewarding path. Plan for at least 5.5 years to become an MBBS doctor and around 9–11 years to become a specialist.

Step by step

  1. Class 11–12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, scoring at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  2. Clear NEET UG – the single entrance for MBBS seats in India.
  3. Counselling – MCC conducts all-India quota counselling (15% of state government seats, AIIMS, JIPMER, central and deemed universities); states conduct counselling for the remaining state quota and private seats.
  4. MBBS – 4.5 years of study + 1 year compulsory internship.
  5. Register with the National Medical Commission/State Medical Council and start practice or a job.
  6. Specialise (optional but common) – MD/MS/DNB through NEET PG (3 years). A new National Exit Test (NExT) has been proposed to replace NEET PG – check its current status. Super-specialisation (DM/MCh) takes 3 more years through NEET SS.

Costs

  • Government colleges: low fees (from a few thousand to around a lakh per year, depending on the state).
  • Private and deemed colleges: can be very expensive – often tens of lakhs for the full course. Check fees before choosing.

Jobs for doctors

  • Medical officer in state health services (through state PSC or health department recruitment)
  • Central government: UPSC Combined Medical Services, ESIC, railways, CAPFs, armed forces (AFMS)
  • AIIMS and other institutes (senior resident, faculty)
  • Private hospitals, own clinic, research and public health

Other routes if MBBS doesn't work out

BDS, AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS), veterinary science, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy are respected health careers – see careers after PCB.

What about MBBS abroad?

Many students study in countries like Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia or the Philippines. To practise in India you must meet NMC rules and pass the licensing exam (FMGE/NExT). Check the latest NMC guidelines and the college's recognition carefully before applying.
