After 10th: which stream or course should I choose?

Science, commerce, arts, diploma or ITI? A simple guide to choosing the right path after Class 10, with the careers each one leads to.

Class 10 is the first big decision point. The good news: no choice here closes every door, and many careers are open to students from any stream. Choose based on what you enjoy and are good at, not only on what friends or relatives pick.

Your main options

OptionDurationBest forLeads to
Science (PCM)2 years (11–12)Maths, physics, problem solvingEngineering, architecture, NDA, B.Sc, computer science, pilot, merchant navy
Science (PCB)2 yearsBiology, living things, healthMBBS, BDS, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, agriculture, biotech
Commerce2 yearsNumbers, business, moneyCA, CS, CMA, B.Com, BBA, banking, finance
Arts / Humanities2 yearsReading, writing, society, peopleCivil services, law, journalism, psychology, teaching, design
Polytechnic diploma3 yearsHands-on technical workJunior engineer jobs, direct 2nd-year B.Tech (lateral entry)
ITI1–2 yearsTrades like electrician, fitter, mechanicRailway ALP/technician, apprenticeships, PSU and industry jobs, own business

How to decide

  1. List the subjects you enjoy and the ones you score well in. If you dislike maths, avoid PCM even if it looks "safe".
  2. Think of 2–3 careers that interest you and check which stream they need (see the table above).
  3. Take our career finder quiz – it takes two minutes.
  4. Talk to someone working in that field – a doctor, an engineer, a CA – about what the work is really like.
  5. Keep a backup: PCMB (both maths and biology) keeps both engineering and medicine open, but it is a heavier workload.

Government jobs you can target after 10th

You need to be 18 years old for most of these (17½ for Agniveer):

Even if you plan to take a job early, try to complete 12th – most better-paying government exams need at least 12th or graduation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Picking science only because "it keeps all options open" when you don't enjoy it.
  • Ignoring arts – it leads to many high-paying and respected careers including civil services and law.
  • Choosing a coaching institute before choosing a goal.

Frequently asked questions

Is arts a bad choice after 10th?

No. Arts students do very well in civil services, law, journalism, psychology, design and teaching. Choose it if you enjoy the subjects.

Can I do engineering after a diploma?

Yes. Diploma holders can join B.Tech in the second year through lateral entry exams run by states and universities.

Which stream is best for government jobs?

Any stream. Most government exams ask for graduation in any subject, so pick the stream you can score well in.
