After graduation: higher studies, government exams or a job?
Your options after BA, B.Sc, B.Com or B.Tech – postgraduate courses, MBA, government exams and private jobs – and how to pick one.
Graduation opens the widest set of choices. Almost every major government exam needs only a degree in any subject, and many professional courses start here.
1. Government exams for graduates
| Exam | Jobs | Age (general) |
|---|---|---|
| UPSC Civil Services | IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS | 21–32 |
| SSC CGL | Inspector, ASO, auditor | 18–32 |
| IBPS PO / SBI PO | Bank officer | 20/21–30 |
| RBI Grade B | RBI officer | 21–30 |
| State PSC | SDM, DSP, BDO | 21–40 (varies) |
| CDS, AFCAT, CAPF | Defence and CAPF officer | 19–26 |
| RRB NTPC | Station master, clerk | 18–33 |

2. Higher studies
- MBA – through CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT. Best with 1–2 years of work experience for top colleges.
- M.Tech / MS – through GATE (IITs, NITs with stipend) or GRE for abroad.
- MA / M.Sc / M.Com – through CUET PG and university tests; leads to UGC NET, teaching and research.
- LLB (3 years) – law after any degree.
- B.Ed – for school teaching (then CTET/TET).
- CA / CS / CMA – graduates can join CA directly at the Intermediate level (with required marks).
3. Private jobs
IT services, sales, banking operations, digital marketing, content, analytics and startups hire graduates in large numbers. Skills (Excel, communication, coding, data tools) matter more than the degree name. Build a short CV, a LinkedIn profile, and apply to off-campus drives.
How to choose
- If you want job security and public service, pick one government exam family (SSC, banking, UPSC/state PSC) and commit for 1–2 years.
- If you enjoy a subject deeply, postgraduate study and research may suit you.
- If you need income now, take a job and prepare in parallel – many successful candidates do this.
- Don't spread yourself across 10 exams. Exams in the same family share a syllabus – SSC CGL, CHSL and CPO, or IBPS PO, SBI PO and RBI Assistant.
