How to prepare for government exams: a practical plan
Choosing the right exam, building a timetable, using mock tests well and staying consistent – a practical guide for first-time aspirants.
1. Choose one exam family
Exams with a shared syllabus can be prepared together:
- SSC family: CGL, CHSL, CPO, MTS
- Banking family: IBPS PO, SBI PO, clerk exams, RBI Assistant, insurance
- Civil services family: UPSC CSE and state PSCs
- Railway family: NTPC, Group D, ALP
Use the eligibility checker to see what you can apply for.
2. Understand the exam before studying
Read the official syllabus and solve one previous year paper in the first week. It shows you the level and the topics that matter.
3. Build a simple daily timetable
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 1.5 hours | Main subject (maths or GS) |
| 1 hour | Second subject (reasoning or optional) |
| 45 minutes | English / language |
| 30 minutes | Current affairs |
| 30 minutes | Revision of yesterday's notes |
4. Use mock tests properly
- Start sectional tests early and full mocks 2–3 months before the exam.
- Analysing a mock is more important than taking it. Note every error and the reason (concept, silly mistake, time).
5. Revise and stay consistent
Short notes, weekly revision and a fixed routine beat long irregular study sessions. Take one half-day off a week to avoid burnout.
6. Stay informed
